…Move It Out

Our household goods wrapped up and ready to load.

The movers came at 9am the day after the packers. There was one main guy who seemed to be in charge and of  who seemed to be his helpers. They carried out the things that were already boxed and labeled with orange stickers for household goods. Then the main guy wrapped everything that wasn’t boxed using large sheets of brown paper. I was surprised this even included the vacuum and steam cleaner, computer chair, and bookcases.

He also wrapped all the duffel bags, some of which had my husband’s pro-gear in it. We had been told by the packers anything labeled as pro-gear would not count toward our weight and that this includes military uniforms, books, gear, etc. When he started to wrap them I told him I didn’t know which ones were the pro-gear, and my husband had stepped out for a minute.

He told me that, actually, only the military gear and books really count as pro-gear. Uniforms count as clothes. However, he always labels duffel bags as duffel bags on the inventory. He said that if he writes “duffel bag—clothes” for example, it would not count as pro-gear, but if he just puts “duffel bags” they don’t know what’s in it and automatically count it as pro-gear.

While the packers had taken out the glass from the coffee and end tables to pack it, they hadn’t dissembled the actual tables. The main guy took them apart as well as our other Ikea and similar furniture. He said that kind of furniture doesn’t weigh much, and if he doesn’t take it apart, it won’t make it over to Germany. He put all the screws and so forth into baggies taped to the pieces, made sure everything was kept together, and wrapped everything up in paper. As I watched him dismantle things, I dreaded having to put it all back together. He told me anything he dissembles will have to put it back together by the movers who unload it in Germany. He advised they might try to tell me they don’t have to, but they do.

He recommended against us buying any expensive furniture while in Germany because he makes sure everything is packed well but some movers don’t on the way back. He said he just had a lady come in from Germany who had bought some expensive furniture and trunks within six months of moving. She had $17k in damages. Insurance will only cover about 60%, so he said at most she’ll get $10k to $12k back. I was considering supplementing anything we need with Ikea anyhow. Hearing that makes it almost a certainty that’s what we’ll do.

When wrapping up our dressers, he asked where the clothes are. I told him most are in our luggage but the rest were packed in boxes by the packers. He said that we were actually supposed to leave them in the drawers, but some packers think they get paid per box. What they really get paid by is the weight of the shipment.

My husband asked when the household goods will be weighed. That is done at the facility prior to shipping. The man asked what we were allotted, and my husband told him 8k lbs. with 3k lbs. for the unaccompanied baggage which had already been taken the day before. The man said it would be pushing it to say we even had 3k lbs. in the apartment. We know that much hadn’t been in unaccompanied baggage, so we should be well under the weight allotment.

I did a final run-through to make sure we had everything. I found a few things such as food storage containers and lids and a few utensils I could swear I had left out for the packers but had been put back in the cupboard. Since our kitchen boxes were already sealed, we put them in our luggage with a book I’d found in our closet.

There was also a storage closet in the apartment where we had put some things. I thought everything had been taken out of it, but I checked again and found a blanket and a couple of boxes. There were some of our roommates’ things, including a box of dishes that was stacked oddly in there. I didn’t want everything crashing down on me, so I took what I knew was ours and hoped that was everything.

Once everything was packed into the truck from the apartment, my husband went over to our storage unit with the movers to put our wardrobe and the boxes on the truck. The lady from the pre-move walkthrough had told us the movers would be putting a sticker on the crate which I’d seen on the counter during the packing process. Once the sticker was on, the next time we see all our stuff will be in Germany.

  1. The guy is a bit off. Not everything need to be disassemble, it is not good for the clothes to be left in the draws. That is actually too much wait on the movers. They would like it better if you pack it in boxes or empty suitcases.

    When the movers come they will ask you where do you want your stuff to be place. So have yourself organize what go where. The will also assemble things for you if you don’t see them doing so than ask for them to. It is in their contract. When we first moved here one mover asked me if I would like for them to build my closet. I told them we don’t have a schrank we plan to make one of the room into a walk in closet. He mention that they do that as well. I said crap we don’t have the material for it because we did not know. They will also hang up pictures for you if you have screws and everything on hand. The make the move a nice move and not so much stress just like the mover in the State. As we tip the movers in the State we also tip the German movers here. Because they go beyond what we expected.

    • He didn’t disassemble everything, but the things that were not sturdy enough to make the move. I don’t know if you’ve ever used Ikea, but I am honestly surprised my stuff survived from Florida to Georgia so I am kind of glad he took it apart before it’s going to travel across the ocean lol.

      Most of our clothes were in the suitcases we were taking with us anyhow and the rest the packers had put in boxes. He was with the moving company so I don’t know why he thought the packers should have left it except that it might have saved space. He has to put the dresser in the container anyhow, and now he has to put the dresser plus boxes from what could have been put in it (when we get there, the drawers could have been removed for easier carrying). But ah well it was already done the way you say the movers prefer so perhaps those unloading it will appreciate the fact.

      Yeah I assume they won’t unpack the boxes for us and I’d rather be the one to organize it anyhow but it’s good they assemble the stuff. I would have no idea where our screws got to lol but I’m sure we can handle pictures. It’s the desk, tv stand, etc that I’d rather not try to reassemble myself. My husband tipped the packers and bought them lunch. I don’t know if the movers got tipped but the man from unaccompanied baggage told us he’d make about $700 just for the day between us and another home he’d loaded, and they get paid based on weight so the household goods movers would make more. So, I’m sure they made a decent day’s wages either way.
