Looking Ahead at 2013

Frohes neues Jahr! (Happy New Year!) Yesterday, I looked back at 2012 and how I fared on the goals I had made for the year (both those made toward the beginning of the year and those that came up as the year went on). Today I want to look ahead to 2013 and share some of the goals I have for this year. I don’t want to call them “resolutions” since priorities can and do change, and we never know what the year will bring. But for now, these are some of the things I’ll be focusing on in the order I thought of them, not necessarily in order of importance:

my guitar

My guitar the year I got it.

*I ordered Rocksmith so could finally learn to play the guitar I’ve had for almost six years and never managed to learn. While I managed to teach myself to play organ/keyboard back when I remembered how to read notes from years with the clarinet, I had trouble with guitar even with trying to use video tutorials. I’m about a week into playing with Rocksmith and already have more down than I did before, so I think it’s going to be a great method to get started with. Then I can add some of the other methods as well as some I haven’t tried before. While I don’t know if it will be this year, once I get better I may also pick up trying to learn bass.

*I would like to learn to knit. I ordered some yarn and knitting needles a couple months back and have some video tutorials that may help. It’s just a matter of starting.

*I want to pick up more German and have a few methods to try including Germanpod101.com, Bussuu.com, reading books with side-by-side German and English, and listening to music in German and translating the lyrics. I may also try to pick up at least a little bit of Italian and French to help when we travel to those countries, which brings me to:

*I want to see more of Europe. I am not sure how far I’ll be able to get in this goal as it depends on our time off and funds. But I do want to at least get some of the areas I know are a shorter drive like parts of France, Luxembourg, and Belgium. Ideally I would also like to get to Italy, the Netherlands, and maybe some other places.

My winner shirts from 2010 and 2011

My winner shirts from 2010 and 2011 NaNoWriMo

*Since I made no progress in creative writing last year, this year I want to write some more fiction…at least a few short stories. I’m not sure if I’ll participate in NaNoWriMo in November, but there is a thing called Camp NaNoWriMo where you can do the same thing in June or August, and I may use that to work on the novels in progress I had wanted to work on this year and didn’t. I’d also like to submit more work than last year but I don’t want to set a specific goal for how much since it will depend on the time I have and the material I have available.

*I want to catch up on my blog and blog more regularly. I’ve been hovering at about six months behind current events for several months now. I have lots of material to work on in many different categories (which reminds me, since so many of my goals this year include learning, I made a new category “A Lifetime of Learning” where you can find the Going to Grad School category I previously mentioned adding, Learning German, and eventually I’ll probably add categories for Learning Guitar and Learning to Knit) so I’m not sure I’ll ever actually “catch up”, but I want to get closer to a few weeks behind events rather than a few months. Last year, I made 90 new posts, which is just under 2 a week. This year I would like to post at least 130, which would be an average of 2.5 a week.

*I managed to get a 4.0 in the two classes I took last semester and would like to continue maintaining that GPA. I’m actually only taking one graduate level class in the spring and have three undergraduate classes I need to take to make up foundations courses (more on that later), which I’m taking Pass/Fail. Then in the fall, I’ll be going back to taking all graduate level classes.

My Turbofire set, ready to go

*I want to get better with exercising regularly and complete more Beachbody programs. Turbofire recently came in and I plan to start it in January. While I probably won’t write a daily post on Investing in Fitness, I plan to at least update weekly throughout the program and for any other programs I might tackle throughout the year.

*I checked my previous lists of books I’ve read and found the year I had finished the most books since I started tracking was 30. So my my goal for this year is to meet or exceed that.

*Since I managed to beat 5 video games two years in a row (although I barely scraped by last year, beating my last game on New Year’s Eve), I’ll attempt to up it a bit this year and try to beat at least 10. I have so many on various systems that I could do this a few times over, so I also tentatively plan to finish at least my goal number of games before I’m allowed to buy any more.

So there you have some of the things I’ll be working on this year. If last year is any indication, priorities and goals may change. We’ll just have to see. What are your goals for the new year?
