Exploring Happiness: What is It? What Makes One Happy? & Happiness Quotes

This morning I was reading a post on M.C. Simon Writes in which M.C. Simon discusses happiness and provides 13 quotes to meditate on. While reading these quotes, I was reminded of some of my own favorite quotes about happiness as well as times I have thought about the idea of being happy, and I thought I would share those with you.

What is Happiness?

M.C.’s question “What really makes you happy?” reminded me of of Silbermond’s official video for their song “Himmel Auf” (Heaven’s Rip Open). I’ve shared the song before with English subtitles for those learning German, but I’ve not yet shared this video, in which people share what makes them happy and what happiness (Glück) is to them. Note, Glück can also mean luck. However, in this case I tend toward thinking it should be interpreted as “happiness”. There are a lot of lovely answers, which unfortunately won’t be intelligible for you who don’t speak German (but will be good practice for those of you learning). Fortunately, Sandra at Transparent Language has provided translations for the answers. Check them out here, although note that she has interpreted Glück as luck.

What Makes You Happy?

Earlier in the year, on my birthday, actually, Toni of One Chocolate Box gave a prompt during her New Year Project to “write in a stream of consciousness about things that make you happy. Only write about things/sensations/experiences.” You can read my answer here if you like. All of those things still make me happy, although unfortunately I haven’t been on HitRECord in awhile. (I do plan to remedy that soon though) but I thought I would try the same exercise again today:

If you like this post, please pin it to your happiness or inspiration board. Don’t have one? Now might be a good time to start one.

Having 6 weeks between practicum and internship with which to take day trips, work on my blog, work on my creative writing, read books that aren’t school-related, and try new things. My min pin warming my feet. Spending time with my husband. Spending time with friends. My dogs’ antics. Taking pictures with my new DSLR and learning how to adjust settings in manual for more creative picture taking. Living life in Germany.

Quotations on Happiness

M.C.’s #2 quote from Martha Washington on being cheerful and happy in situations in which she finds herself reminds me of a quote by Helen Keller, who may have been inspired by Mrs. Washington: “Everything has its wonders, even darkness and silence, and I learn, whatever state I may be in, therein to be content.”

Here are a few other quotes on happiness I like:

“The reason people find it so hard to be happy is that they always see the past better than it was, the present worse than it is, and the future less resolved than it will be.”~~Marcel Pagnol

“The happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts.”~~Marcus Aurelius

“Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle and the life of a candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases from being shared.”~~Buddha

“When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life.”~~John Lennon

Need more thoughts about happiness? I actually have a Don’t Worry; Be Happy board on Pinterest where you can find thoughts on being happy as well as thoughts to encourage you not to worry.

What is happiness for you? What makes you happy? Whose thoughts on happiness inspire you toward the same? Feel free to share your answers to any or all of these questions in the comments. If you decide to write a blog post on this topic, please come back and share with us.
